Tamaskan Dogs for stud

0 Dogs found

The Tamaskan, also called the Tamaskan Dog, Tamaskan Husky or simply the Tam, is a wolf-like breed developed in Finland from sled-dog crosses including the Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute and German Shepherd. Despite its lupine looks it contains no recent wolf ancestry and was bred purely as a trainable companion and working dog. The name is often translated as "mighty wolf" in the Native American Munsee language. The breed is recognised by the American Rare Breed Association but not by the Kennel Club or the FCI, and it matures slowly, reaching full adulthood at three to four years.

Tamaskans are large, athletic dogs, standing roughly 60 to 70 cm at the shoulder and weighing 25 to 40 kg, slightly taller than a German Shepherd. They are intelligent, versatile workers that excel at sledding, canicross and agility, and they need a great deal of daily exercise and mental stimulation. With their family they are affectionate and good with children, though they can be wilful, dislike being left alone and often have a strong prey drive, so they suit active, experienced homes. The thick double coat comes in wolf grey, red grey and black grey and needs weekly brushing, with heavy seasonal shedding. Life expectancy is around 14 to 15 years.

FAQs

No, despite their striking wolf-like looks, Tamaskans are friendly, gentle dogs with an even temperament. Aggression is not typical of the breed unless a dog feels threatened or has been poorly handled. As with any large, intelligent working breed, early socialisation and consistent training are key to raising a calm, confident adult.
